The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor and Greed, was published in 2000 by Harper Collins and updated in a paperback edition with a new Epilogue in 2001, and a new Afterword in 2021. The book covers the history of the famed Italian fashion label from its roots in the early 1900s to the modern era. It traces the turmoil over three generations and the loss of the company by Maurizio Gucci, the last member of the Gucci family to run the fashion house. It chronicles Gucci's spectacular turnaround under Tom Ford and Domenico De Sole and its continued success under the ownership of Francois-Henri Pinault's Kering conglomerate, showing how the brand continues to be a pioneer today.

Writing the book

The "House of Gucci" grew out of Forden's reporting from Milano in the eighties on the explosion of labels including Gucci, Armani, Versace, Prada and Ferragamo from family ateliers into mega brands. She was inspired by her interviews with Maurizio Gucci, the last family member to run the company, during her time covering the industry as Bureau Chief for Women's Wear Daily.

Forden worked on the manuscript during a two-year sabbatical starting in 1998, during which time she conducted deep research into the history of the company and the family. She consulted a fashion historian who was reconstructing the Gucci archive and interviewed more than 100 people, including family members, current and former employees and others who were intimately connected to the story. She conducted a jail-house correspondence with Patrizia Reggiani after her arrest for the murder of Maurizio Gucci and was in the courtroom for most of the trial, which went on for nearly five months.

Forden wove together the family saga spanning three generations with the evolution of the Gucci brand, including the secret, 18-month buyout of Aldo Gucci and his sons on behalf of Maurizio's anonymous partner, Bahrain-based Investcorp. The book also chronicles the pitched takeover battle for Gucci between French billionaires Bernard Arnault and Francois Pinault in the late 1990s.

The movie tie-in edition of the book, to be published the end of October, includes a new "Afterword" detailing highlights of the Gucci story over the past 20 years since the book was published.

    —Cosmopolitan

  • "A riveting account of the talent and creative chaos that built one of the world's great luxury-goods empires--and the egotism, bitter family conflict, and incompetence that nearly destroyed it. While she details the corporate history meticulously, Forden, former Milan bureau chief for Women's Wear Daily, structures the story around forceful personalities and the mystery behind Maurizio Gucci's 1995 murder. It's a business tale that has the holding power and pace of an engaging novel. … Forden's book is a richly detailed read for anyone fascinated by the legends of Gucci past and the new Gucci-in-the-making."

    —Bloomberg Business Week

  • "Glamour, greed, sex, style, and very, very good leather goods -- what more can you ask for (besides a 30 percent discount)?"

—Michael Gross, bestselling author of Model and 740 Park

  • "Fashion has never been so dramatic—and dangerous. The saga of three generations of the Gucci family opens with an execution-style murder in Milan and penetrates the world of one of the hottest fashion labels of our time. Fashion insider Sara Forden spins the tale of how a bunch of greedy, bickering Guccis lost control of the empire that made GG synonymous with loafers."

    — Teri Agins, author of The End of Fashion

  • "I had the opportunity to see the book in advance and I think it's well-written. Ms. Forden certainly conducted excellent research, and has done a great job in trying to understand the history and most recent events at Gucci. A lot of passion went into this book."

    — Domenico De Sole, chairman and chief executive officer of Gucci Group, quoted in Women's Wear Daily
